‘Don’t mention Rabbits’

The Isle of Portland Falconers Lodge is an experiment into pre-emption, anticipation, and finding home.

Developed from the unit brief, the project came to have a fascination with how the building can form intimate relationships on a micro-specific level. Told as a narrative though the eyes of a falconer, the program centres around implementing ecological control on the cliff edge of the East coast of Portland, suggesting the use of falconry to deter and catch damaging invasive species such as rabbits. Playing into the hand of local superstition, the mentioning or sighting of a rabbit is notoriously bad luck.Using the operations of a falconry lodge, the architecture explores how it can position itself on the site in the most meaningful way possible, and hold itself in a state of apprehension, waiting for its next requirement. As it does this, it allows for new conditions and spaces to emerge, and with them, the potential for new ecological discoveries.

Finally, celebrating a return to the studio and workshop, this project has maximised the role of fabrication as a design tool, optimising CNC milling to re-frame manufacturing limitations into productive construction devices.

Anatomical Studies

A dissection of the final set of spaces that make up Habitats 1 and 2 of the falconers lodge. Surface material is unfolded, and pulled away from the chassis to reveal the cavities and infrastructure beneath. Graphite and watercolour on 250gsm Card.

Falconers Approach

Understanding the approach view of Habitat 2, where the falcon dwells. The falconers horizon is constant, whilst the falcon must constantly recalibrate as the building finds a new position to rest in. Graphite and watercolour on 250gsm Card.

Habitat 1 Milled Reference

Using digital subtractive fabrication to excavate the cavities that make up the lower living space, where the Falconer rests. Reclaimed PU Foam, milled with a 1.5mm Endmill.

Habitat 2 Milled Reference

Milling the upper living space that meets Habitat 2, where the Falcon dwells. The stock, and the architecture are augmented to allow tool access, making the fabrication process an active participant in the buildings design.

The Falconers Lodge Operation

Exploring the setup, and movement of the Falconers Lodge during a drying and feeding cycle. As tension is applied to the drying space (Node 4) the building is forced to contract, and find a new position on the turbulent cliff site.
